Ann May to Priscilla Strange 1 May 1838 Cornhill 5th Mo 1st 1838 Dearest P. Thou wilt give me credit for having felt no small anxiety on receipt of thine yesterday which was put into my hand when we stopped here in the carriage - I had to send it out to thy F. after taking my seat in the meeting appointed by S.Grubb which consisting of those who had seceded in addition to us, we fill'd, or nearly so, the men's meeting house; & a very powerful arousing testimony she bore to the Truth in gospel simplicity as well as authority - We quitted that house to go to the large Committee on our side when the men soon crowded in and after dear S.G. had spoken nearly two hours to us she was strengthened to stand more than two hours longer so I hope her burden is in measure cast where it belonged - We got home to supper last evening & walked up here after breakfast anxious to hear of thee I did hope to have sent thee a prescription from Edward - but he was not here this morning - has rarely miss'd & yesterday for the first time of a Y.M. dined with us at Francis's he begged me not to leave these interesting meetings in haste as if I were with thee I could do nothing more than recommend a little cooling medicine a little dose of Epsom salt & soda - sister Tuckett says a teaspoonful of Sal volatile in salts - my advice is to keep unremittingly to the breast ointment & poultice - chilly thou wilt feel if it is coming to suppuration & I fear that must be - I am risen from the dinner table to scribble - sister T. & I were at the large Committee and came from Frank's in a coach, there was such a shower last evening - the meeting brake up at the commencement of a thunder storm we had our cloaks sent to trudge hither thro' the mire - It is so near[ ] meeting time possibly we may finish tomorrow morning - We think of spending 1st day at Wandsworth, home thro' Tottenham I hope on 2nd - We have J.Foster & Susan &c to dine - Jane is absent today with sick headache - We met with Joseph Cocking coming up this morning - a short man enlarged out of knowledge - retired from business too - Of more important things I have scarcely time to speak. The epistle to the Counties passed this morning ready for this afternoon - It is relieving to find you get on so well in the new state of things - I wish Smith would offer by letter before giving warning yet it must be left but I quite think she would do - I suppose thy ailment need not prevent the boys going to Ampthill - I long to tell thee a secret but mind I have not said that James Ransome is going to take Eliza Coleby home with him - he did a more important thing a day or two ago by putting his youngest son who left his place at Reading on board a ship as an apprentice -Thy F. joins me in very dear love to you & all & I remain Thy affectionate Mother.
