Margaret Sims May to Priscilla Strange 26 July 1837
Ipswich 26th of 7th mo 1837
My very dear Aunt
There is so good an opportunity of writing I thought I would send thee a few lines to say that after a very nice journey we arrived safe at Ipswich I was very glad as thou mayst suppose to see Joseph we have very much enjoyed his visit here.
Yesterday H.R.C. & W. with Joseph & myself went gipsying to be out of the noise of the Election which began yesterday.
We hope very soon to see thee & Uncle here. We have had company ever since we came home. On the evening of the day Grandpapa set off who should come by the steam packet but Stafford Allen, Joseph Lister & his son John.
Stafford Allen went away on the 3rd day after by the coach to London J.& J.Lister went the day after at 1/2 past 2, & in the evening of the same day came the bearer of this [J.Hardwicke]. Clement & Mary Dumelow have also been here.
This morning I heard a boy go past our window crying "New blue potatoes" Blue is the Tory's colour here. Blue & Yellow gooseberries were also cried yesterday.
Please tell J.Billington that the plants he gave us came safe & go on very well. We shall have a few plants to show thee when thou com'st for papa bought 9 before we came home which with the 4 brought from A. & a little fuchsia which I bought in the market the other day make 15. Quite grand for Carr Street.
Please tell Dix that the thing I was to tell him the morning we went away was that he was very silly to give us again the paper & strings that we used to tie to him
It is now 4 o'clock & the poll is closed we believe one Whig & one Tory are in but we are not quite sure.
Please give H.'s & my love to Lucy Ann & Eliza & tell them that we have sent them a few shells not for their beauty or variety but because we picked them up ourselves on Felixstowe beach. H.R.C. & W. send their dear love to all including thy dear self in which I unite
And remain Thy very affectionate niece Margaret
P.S. This is an Ipswich not an Ampthill newspaper.
