Edward Harris Strange to Priscilla May c.Mar.1834 Ampthill My dear Priscilla, In replying to thy note yesterday I would just say that thy conclusion respecting a conversation in the morning is incorrect, thy Father not having mentioned to me anything more than that thou had declined taking a ride to Marston & I infer from thy own remarks that a great deal more was said about it than I could have wished - This I cannot prevent.- Respecting my general reading and choice of books it is necessary to make a few short remarks - Thou seems a little afraid that our views and general pursuits do not sufficiently assimilate and that we shall never be companionable to each other particularly as it regards our reading, and selection of authors. It is very true that my reading has not been very diversified, but that it has been pretty much confined to one class of books; and having but little time I could devote to any pursuit of my own it seemed best to employ that time in reading such works as appeared most instructive.- and I have {now} for the last few years given preference to works of a serious character, tho' not to the exclusion of all others - I have read some interesting works not on religious subjects, and if a change of circumstances should afford more opportunities for reading it would be gratifying to me to read or hear thee read approved modern publications, believing that works of this description are calculated to inlarge [sic] the understanding - I feel much attached to many of our old books, which regard I trust I shall never lose and hope my ever affectionate Priscilla will not find fault with me on that account. I remain Thy sincerely affectionate Friend E.H.Strange P.May
