Ann May to Priscilla May 1828 Tottenham 4th day My dear Priscilla Knowing that a line from my own hand will be more satisfactory than a verbal report to thee & all who were anxious about me I proceed to tell thee, that after leaving Luton, instead of improving, my illness increased to such an extent that could I have foreseen it all, my courage would have failed at setting off, I had such searching chills, with stupor, pain in the limbs, & most violent headache, increased by the excessive heat of the sun, that by the time we reached T. I was scarcely able to speak even to Edward - &c.- I passed a most distressing night & indeed until this evening could scarcely call myself better - Medicine & gruel have been my support almost exclusively as to food I never {remember} to have known such a perfect loathing. [missing] prepared to bleed me this morning but found the fever lower so I was excused & now, just at bed time, I feel decidedly improved & hope a few more doses of gruel & medicine will enable me before long to go to Kennington. If Sarah should find time to make any of my night waistcoats she should observe to cut the small end of the shoulder gusset to a point.- Thy F. is gone to bed & E. come from a patient so with his & C.'s dear love I must say farewell in haste I remain Thy affectionate Mother [Seal : oval waffle pattern, red wax.] [Watermark : Prince of Wales feathers 1828] Priscilla
