Eliza Beck to Priscilla May Dec 1825 My dear Priscilla In very great haste I sit down to write a few lines to thee in return for thy kind letter received at Brighton which place I left about 3 weeks since I was with my beloved sister during her confinement with a sweet little girl at first she got on so rapidly freed from having too much exertion her strength decreased so much as to make us very uneasy about her she however went out for a little change of air and return'd so much benefitted that I was able to leave her comfortably. I have since had the great satisfaction of hearing that she continues nicely. I got much attached to the dear children and it was not without a struggle that I left them though the attractions of home were quite equal and in some respects superior for however much we may enjoy ourselves but there is something which binds us to the place of our residence "Mid pleasures & palaces tho' we may roam Be it never so humble there's no place like home" I was sorry I could not see thee as I pass'd through London but my time was so short that I could not conveniently visit Newington and it unfortunately happened that thou wast not at meeting. Thy brother Charles has been here since my return he seems vastly pleased with his baby. Our Latin Class is now in full play and we enjoy it much we are now very attentive and I hope we are making a little progress it is a delightfully interesting language one that gets more & more so as the further we advance. Lucas Junr has joined it he is an excellent Latin scholar and is so kind as to read over our lessons with us after school which I hope will be of much use. Excuse the uninteresting scratch and believe me Thine sincerely, Eliza Beck Priscilla May Stoke Newington
