Sarah Arch to Priscilla May 10 Oct 1823 London 10th Mo 10th 1823 My dear Priscilla, Thy little Note was very acceptable and but I wish thou hadst mention'd how thy head is, also some particulars of Charles's mansion, which I suppose by this time is nearly finish'd, and that his Cookery goes on briskly in the laboratory.- I am sorry to hear the darling is unwell, it must make him look graver than ever,- Francis brought me thy note, which I read aloud while he staid, and on coming to the second Birdcage we both exclaim'd well done, and thought we might perhaps hear of a third before I came to the end, but not so. - I herewith send two which are quite at thy service, and perhaps thou wilt value the large one more when I tell thee it was made by thy cousin Alfred Tuckett. - as we are in want of Candles & Tea thought I might as well send them by Waggon and write at same time. - just received a basket from Ampthill containing a Hare for which we are obliged, and have sent the Parcels to Edward. We staid about 10 days at Frenchay as I suppose you have heard from H. T.[Henry Tuckett] - and we went from there to Alton in a Post Chaise, accompanied by Elizabeth Curtis reach'd Basingstoke about tea time, and finding our Aunt Wallis was gone to Abingdon we walk'd down to Richards and had a comfortable cup of Tea with them, his Wife is a very agreeable woman, and they have two nice little Boys, - James Wallis was just return'd from the Isle of Wight where he had accompanied Uncle Maddock of Wandsworth and had seen him aboard a vessel for Guernsey before he left him- We did not reach Alton before 1/2 past 8 - found our Relations all pretty well - thy dear Aunt M. better than we expected, and able to walk about by herself without support, though rather lame, she has also regained the use of her Arm so as to feed herself tho' she cannot yet dress herself without assistance, - we were only two days at Alton, both of which she spent with us up Street, & at A.Crowleys, - Charlotte's is a good temper'd little Boy & grows more like his Papa they say.- Little Mary Curtis is at Alton, but I suppose she will return when they know of a suitable person to take charge of her - her Papa came down on the 7th day we were there and return'd home with us on 2nd - since which he has been to Norwich to fetch home thy Aunt and little Anna, they seem much pleas'd with their visit, - we spent last evening with them also thy Uncle Hooper - thy Aunt and family being all at Croydon, having taken possession of the house there while they are at Brighton - so that we have not seen any of them since our return.- S Maddock from Deptford spent last 2nd Day with us, she appears to be very comfortable, they are looking out for an apprentice.- My Brother Edward has taken a hasty cup of tea with us since our return, believe he will be very glad to see the little woman home again, when she has done playing in the Sea (which I hear she does), don't know whether thy father has heard that B Miller of Alton has been deceased some weeks - I think I mention'd to thy Mother that I was in want of a Cook, please tell her that mine has agreed to stay with me over the next yearly meeting - Francis Tuckett left last 6th Day Evening he travel'd to Bristol with the Pony Chaise - he was to go {yesterday} into Wales with Philip to look at some wool, he had not then seen Edward Ash, so did not know what day they should start for Edinburgh - this for his Brother Henry's information with my dear love to him - My Sister M Arch wishes to have sent by first opportunity her usual quantity of Tea - I also wish to have mine, also 3 Doz Shop Candles 3 Doz Kitchens & 2 Dozen Moulds. When thy cousin Alfred visits you again, please to remind him of the Fowls he was to send me - thy Uncle joins me in dear love to thy Father & Mother, Brothers & Cousins, I remain my dear P Thy affectionate Aunt S A [Sarah Arch] Priscilla May Ampthill Beds
