- Admin/biog historyThe leases provide the chief interest of this group. Woodhall Farm or Grange is said to have been on the site of a manor which belonged to Warden Abbey. (V.C.H. Beds.ii,288.) In 1542 Woodhall manor was granted by royal letters patent to Sir Henry Grey of Wrest and his wife Anne. (V.C.H.,II,290.) In 11/16 there is an intresting reference to the dovehouse there. Of the other leases 11/23 is concerned with St. Thomas's Chapel Manor, which before the Dissolution belonged to Chicksands Priory. It was acquired by the Grey family at the same time as Woodhall, and it remained in their hands until 1709 when it was sold to Christ's Hospital. (ibid.) Before it passed to Sir Henry Grey it had been leased in 1533 to Henry Strynger of Meppershall by Prior of Chicksands. (Jeayes' Catalogue no. 614.) Other leases of the manor by Sir Henry to a 'John Strynger' were made in 1543 and 1548 (op. cit. nos 618-20.) and the lease was renewed in 1569.(no.624.) By 1591 the tenant was Thomas Felde of Meppershall. (no.627.)
