Amabella, Countess Dowager of Kent, purchased Higham Gobion manor in 1657 from Sir Roger Langley (L9/15). Before that date the Langley family had held the property for some twenty years, having bought it from the heiress of the Butler family, Jane Bellassis (L9/5). Earlier deeds of the property are to be found in BS. 980-1016. The Butler estate appears to have been split up, for the Countess bought other small lots from the Taverner family in 1655 and 1667 (L. 9/33, 43 and 47). There is little of particular interest in the Higham leases. The sotck of one farm is listed in full for sale (L. 9/77). The estate was divided into two farms called Higham Farm and Higham Dairy respectively. The Lucas property seems all to have been in the part of Higham Gobion which lies around the church and hamlet proper, and not in the detached portions. For the manor of Westhey and Faldo (afterwards Faldo Farm), situated in a detached part of Higham Gobion, transferred to Pulloxhill by the South Beds. Review Order 1933, see D.D.X. 95/90-125. This property was purchased somtime after 1863 and sold in 1917. The deeds were found at Panshanger and deposited here by the Hertford County Record Office.
