Letters from Wm. Bennett of Lewsey Farm, Dunstable, to Thos. Batchelor at Lidlington Stating his objections to the practicability of Batchelor's proposal for legislation revising the existing law on tenants' improvements, though he agrees that the existing law is "unjust and tyrannous." He hoped to have raised the subject "at our last meeting in London" (?of the Roy.Ag.Soc.?), but there was "such a state of ferment" over Lord Stanhope's opposition to the poor law. 13 July 1836. The same to the same. Batchelor has reproached him with not referring to the matter in his "observations at Luton", but "the purpose of the meeting was to show how beneficial upon the whole the new (poor law) system is". He reaffirms his sympathy with the aim, and quotes a letter from the Duke of Bedford written "when the landlords were very grievously alarmed at the riots etc. among the agricultural labourers"; but he doubts the remedy. "And you are aware that I am rather peculiarly situated now, having offered my services as a land agent." 24 January 1838.
