Thomas Sworder was a partner in his uncle's solicitor's firm of Longmore, Sworder & Longmore. His brothers Charles and Robert purchased Gray & Company's business in 1849 [see WB/Gray] and Thomas took this over in the 1850s. In 1857 he purchased Burr's Brewery [see WB/B] and later took over the businesses of Bennetts of Dunstable and John Anstee of George Street, Luton as well as founding the Luton Wine Company. When threatened with bankruptcy Thomas Sworder & Company was put up for auction and purchased by J.W.Green Limited in 1897 [see WB/Green]
