  • Title
This bundle of deeds was among those found in an old brief bag in the Shire Hall, Bedford, in the first decade of the twentieth century. A brief calender of the deeds was prepared by Messrs. Hardy and Page, and this was published in Bedfordshire County Records Vol. III. The deeds themselves were subsequently cleaned and repaired by Dr. G. H. Fowler, who gave them the reference numbers AD 2/1-18, and they have now been re-numbered AD 145 - 162. The deeds relate to separate premises in the Market Square and Angel Street, Bedford, which together with extensive property in Cardington, Elstow, Kempston and Harrowden, belonged to the Taylor family of Bedford in the eighteenth century. The Angel Street property was purchased by the Harpur Trust in 1828, and futher deeds to the estates of the Taylor family are to be found in the records of the Trust. In addition, there are a few deeds in AD Bundle 8 which relate to these properties. In the catalogue entries grouped under the ADII sub-fonds, the deeds are arranged in the same order as they were described by Messrs. Hardy and Page (i.e chronologically), and no attempt has been made to group them according to the properties to which they relate. The reader who requires a more classified list should refer to the list of the Harpur Trust deeds (ref: HT 1/6-8) where the deeds from both collections are fully calendered side by side.
