  • Admin/biog history
William Hogg (d 1862) married Elizabeth, the younger daughter of Samuel Wells II, Brewer & Banker of Biggleswade. The elder daughter married Robert Lindsell, Solicitor and partner of the precursor of Hooper & Fletcher (see HF42 & 43.) William & Robert Lindsell became the partners of Wells's Biggleswade Brewery & Bank on his death in 1831. Naturally Hogg used Lindsell & his successors as their solicitors. Hogg Family The Hoggs came from Kings Lynn in Norfolk and no doubt were attracted to Biggleswade & Sandy by the trade up the River Ouse and Ivel Navigation. William had at least four brothers, including George who ran the Setch Brewery in Norfolk, the Revernd Martin, whose daughter married Robert Lindsell's son, and Frederick Hogg of Girtford (see HF47.) The Hogges & the Archdales William changed his name to Hogge. His son, Frederick (1827-1903), the leading partner in the Biggleswade Brewery & Bank, changed his name in 1866 to Archdale. His grandmother was an Archdale of Thornham, Norfolk and Frederick probably changed his name to Archdale to inherit their land there. After moving to Baldock. Herts, from which he commuted by horse to Biggleswade, he retired to the Southampton area. A number of Frederick's family settled in Hampshire.
