Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment attestation books (Army Book 358). The pro-forma columns in volumes one to six include: Army Number (sequentially); whether in the Regular Army, Militia, Special Reserve or Territorial Force; name in full; date on attestation; age on attestation; place of attestation; unit from which transferred (if any) with date; trade on enlistment; period of mobilised or embodied service; parish and county of birth; full names of wife and children (widows, spinsters and step-children, for example, are indicated); place of marriage and birth of each child; date of marriage and birth of each child; campaigns, wounds, medals and rewards of any kind; date and place of discharge; cause of discharge; rank and character on discharge; rate of pension awarded (if any); address on discharge; particulars of former service. The information in volumes one to six becomes progressively less detailed (see individual catalogue entries) and by volume nine only the army number, full name, and cause of transfer or discharge, with date, is given. All volumes include an A-Z names’ index. The covering dates for each volume are the dates of attestation. The early volumes (one and two) give retrospective information, while for all volumes the dates of transfer/discharge are often much later.
