  • Title
Discharge books for men of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment and the 1st Hertfordshire Regiment (T.A.). In the years up to and including 1939 the books form indexes of 'non-pension' soldiers' documents sent to the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, which were then certified as received by the Infantry Office, often 10 years or so later. The later books are not annotated or certified in this way. The series ceases in 1958 when the Regiment amalgamated with the Essex Regiment to form the 3rd East Anglian Regiment. Volumes usually contain the following (variations are noted in the catalogue entries): whether Regular Army (RA) or Territorial Army (T.A.) - only up to 1930; army number; surname and initials; remarks (may include notes of desertions, deaths, re-enlistments, transfers, destination of documents). Also notes missing documents. Alphabetical index by first letter of surname.
