    Photograph of milestone reading "55 Miles from London - Eaton", originally attached to a piece of paper on which was the following: Milestone erected as part of a suite commencing at Hicks Hall (built 1612, demolished c.1820), regarded as the zero point for miles measured up the old Great North Road. The Act creating this suite was 11 Geo.I cap.20, 1725..."for repairing and amending the road from Biggleswade to Bugden" effective from 1st May 1725, for 25 years, renewable. Eaton Socon was at the time, and until the late C20th, in Bedfordshire, and the section this milestone belonged to was the Biggleswade to Haile Bridge; the stone is noted on the 1765 Survey of Thomas Jefferys.
