  • Admin/biog history
'Church Recording was launched by NADFAS in 1973 in response to the challenge from the V&A: “would it be possible for groups of volunteers to acquire the expertise to record and archive the artefacts inside churches to a professional standard?”. In 2021 the Church Recording Society was formed by the Church Recorders themselves to take over being the national society for the church recording project. Most Church Recording Groups have been a volunteering activity of one of the UK wide decorative and fine arts societies affiliated to The Arts Society (NADFAS’s operating name). This continues to be the case.' [taken from the Church Recording Society's website 5/6/2025].
  • Scope and Content
This collection consists of records of churches; these were produced by groups of local volunteers in accordance with a scheme being used nationally by NADFAS members with the support and encouragement of the Council for the Care of Churches. The terminology and method of recording is as laid down in "Inside Churches: a guide to church furnishings" (1989, revised 1993) produced by NADFAS. They generally record: stonework, windows, pictures and photographs, textiles, metalwork, woodwork and furnishings.
