  • Admin/biog history
Albert Richardson's partnership with Charles Lovett Gill started in 1906 at Red Lion Street in London, before moving to 46 Great Russell Street in 1908. On the outbreak of war in 1939, Richardson retired to Ampthill and such work as he did during those years was done at his Ampthill office. In 1946 Richardson went into partnership with his son-in-law, Eric Houfe practising at 31 Old Burlington Street, London. Work continued to be done from the Ampthill office. In 1952 the partnership moved to Queen Anne Street, London. Sir Albert died on 3 February 1964 aged 83. Eric Houfe continued running the firm until his retirement in 1980, when the firm ceased operating. The documents from London were then brought Ampthill.
  • Scope and Content
Richardson & Gill and Richardson & Houfe worked on a variety of commissions including private houses, factories, offices, colleges etc. Richardson & Gill's commissions included work for the Duchy of Cornwall and University College, London. After the second world war Richardson worked on a number of commissions which started off as reparations to war damage including the Assembly Rooms, Bath, St James's church, Piccadilly and Trinity House, London. One major commission for Richardson & Houfe was St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham where work started in the late 1940s and continued into the 1970s. Another major commission was the Financial Times building. As well as successful commissions the plans include drawings for competitions such as Coventry Cathedral. There is also a model for a proposed new County Hall for Bedfordshire County Council, a commission which Richardson & Gill competed for unsuccessfully.
  • Archival history
Pre 1939 plans and files from the London office were created by Richardson & Gill, then passed to Richardson & Houfe in 1946. Post 1946 London office plans and files and plans and files from the Ampthill office were created by Richardson & Houfe. Eric Houfe and his son Simon Houfe deposited the collection on long term loan with the Record Office in 1980. On the death of Eric Houfe the ownership of the collection passed to Simon Houfe. In both the London and Ampthill offices bundles of plans and files were arranged in rough date order using a running numerical system. As a result two separate series of plans and working drawings were created. There is no correlation between the numbers of the plans and the numbers of the files. Indexes to the series exist but are idiosyncratic and incomplete. The indexes have been word processed with corrections and additional information to make them more user-friendly and easier to search. The plans are currently being given a more detailed listing and large projects which have rolls scattered around the series are having their plans brought together to make retrieval easier, the original bundle numbers are however being retained. Work on listing the files is also on going.
  • System of arrangement
The collection is arranged so that the index proceeds the series to which it refers. Currently these indexes (or their digital equivalent) are the only way to find the plans or files which are required. These lists are known to include inaccuracies.
