- Admin/biog historyEdward Frederick Smith was born in Luton in 1895 to Frederick William Smith, straw hat machinist/tailor and Annie Elizabeth Smith née Osborne. In 1911 the family resided at 143 Wellington Street. Edward enlisted in the Royal Army Service Corps in 1916 where he served as a horse transport driver. Edward’s brother Cyril also fought in the war and was killed in France in 1918. Edward survived the war, married an Emily Lane and lived in Chandos Road, Luton, and died in 1965.
