- Scope and Content'I am very glad you are sensible of the value of your time at your present happy period of life; and of the good account you give of Lord Mahon, and your calling him your friend.' [Charles Stanhope, later 3rd Earl Stanhope]. 'The time you spent in Germany was not of equal importance to that you have now to improve...... In Germany you had not the powers you have now, as at present, the powers you have, have not yet that energy that maturity will give them.' Recommends Alexander sets down what are the particulars that an English nobleman ought to be instructed in when he enters into life, and then set against each what he has learnt and has yet to learn.
