  • Scope and Content
Encloses Income paper with clause 6 completed for Lady Lucas to sign and forward to Mr Hayhead the assessor. The writer signed a similar form as agent for the house at Putney, and delivered it to Mr Hawes. Mr Hutchins, the Collector in London knows that Lady Lucas is out of Town; he has promised to contact the writer as soon as the Commissioners have allowed the return. The writer has paid the Armorial Bearings Tax and sends the receipt. Has not yet paid Mr Lewis' rent. Has received an imperfect verbal response to the letter sent to Lewis on the subject of Lord Spencer's demand of rent. The case is as follows: Mr Lewis covenanted with Mr Bembridge to obtain from Lord Spencer an additional term in a piece of ground part of Lady Lucas' premises, and therefore to grant an underlease to Bembridge at such rent at should be payable to Lord Spencer. Since 8 June 1793 Lewis obtained the lease from Lord Spencer at £3 3s per annum for 57 acres from the Lady Day preceeding; and the rent for the time that has lapsed is now in arrear. The writer has required Mr Lewis to grant the lease persuant to his covenant with Bembridge, to the benefit of which Lady Lucas is now entitled. The this request, Lewis gives no answer, but says as the ground is in the occupation of Lady Lucas, she should pay the rent. The writer considers there is a better chance of obtaining the lease while the rent due to Lord Spencer remains unpaid. The writer will address Mr lewis again. Mr Mourgue informs the writer that Lewis will not grant a lease of the meadow unless Lady Lucas makes him a very handsome offer, which the writer understands to be a sum in excess of the value of the fee simple, on the grounds that in other hands the meadow might be made prejudicial to the enjoyment of the house. P.S. (9 Aug 1800) Mr Hutchins informs that the Commissioners have not yet examined Lady Lucas' tax return. Encloses receipt for half year's rent, received from Mr Mourgue. Also encloses receipt for half years poor rate due for house at Putney (£8 8s).
