  • Scope and Content
Translation: Excellency. On coming back from Segovia I found Your Excellency's revered note in which you are so good to communicate to me the original answer that you had received from Madrid together with what I took the liberty to beg you to serve a friend of mine's solicitudes. Therefore I do not waste an instant of time and I confirm from this very moment to Your Excellency my most respectful obligations. I will reserve myself to make up for other explanations tomorrow morning when I will have the opportunity to bow to you. I agree with Your Excellency about the fact that Mr. Cav. Mengs's reasons are more than convincing and they excuse him for not having been able to undertake the commission for the new picture. For that reason I do not have any doubts that our friend will report them, too. It still remains to be said that Your Excellency, with your usual kindness, accept my true feelings of gratitude and be so good as to keep me the honour of your grace and friendship of which I will try to be more and more worthy. In the meantime it is my duty to declare myself of Your Excellency. Col(a) 16th September 1775 Your most Affectionate and Obliged Servant Archbishop of Col(..)ea (... ).
