Lord Castlereagh very badly treated. Blame should not attach to Canning altogether. Canning told the Duke of Portland that he could not continue in the cabinet with Castlereagh, & it was arranged that the latter should be removed. The Duke discussed the matter with Lord Camden, & soon all the cabinet knew, except Lord Castlereagh. The failure of the expedition brought things to a head. A friend of Castlereagh asked writer if a formal quarrel should be made with Canning. Writer advised not, as onus was on Duke of Portland as head of cabinet. However the duel with Canning took place. Perceval has advised the King to send for Lord Grey & Lord Grenville.
