  • Scope and Content
These were apparently written by John Orlebar himself, and at its fullest the series contained three classes of volume, though it is not until 1729 that the position is stabilised; in addition there seem to have been ancillary types of which only two have been discovered. The main series at its most complete contained the following classes: (a) Waste books in which receipts and payments for estate and household management were made as they occurred. (b) Journals with the day by day entries in the above with certain cash items omitted as irrelevant, and the rest arranged for transfer to the ledger. (c) Ledgers based on the double entry system set out to show income and expenditure from multifarious departments of estate and household management Kept with meticulous care, including separate accounts for each tenant, and even income from card winnings, these volumes are elaborately subdivided and indexed. Of ancillary accounts only those relating to Luke Bolney, apparently an agent (OR1360) and to wood sales (OR1363) are known.
