School Board Estate: documents of title for real estate owned by School Boards in Bedfordshire
Admin/biog history
In general these are working deed packets rather than archives. However, where the land has been registered or sold the packets have been retained by the archives for their historical research value. Some are retained on behalf of academies for use by the archives, others have passed to archives from the local authority once they were no longer relevant as evidence to the council's estate.
Archival history
When schools that had been school board run transferred to being the responsibility of the Bedfordshire Local Education Authority in 1903 the deeds were transferred to the archive service along with other records from the schools and were catalogued under reference SB. At some point it was decided that the deeds should be transferred from the archives to the county council's deeds registry and they were recatalogued as CCE/SB. As school sites have been sold or transferred the deeds have either been handed over or retained as archives. In some cases it has been possible to reincorporate those that are now archives with their original SB series in other cases, i.e. where the SB series has been recatalogued, the CCE/SB reference has been retained.
