Shelton won 3-0 2 May: Pupil won second prize in Rutland Water Show (Anglian Water Authority) painting competition and two other entries from the school were highly recommended 12 May: A scheme for having old people in school for lunch was launched; will continue fortnightly 9 Jun: Younger children went to Whipsnade Zoo 30 Jun-13 Jul: Various dancing displays 20 Sep: Pest control officer put down poison for the mice found at the weekend; children went to Marston Moretaine to see the Princess of Wales who was visiting the MacIntyre School at Westoning. 1984 9 Jan: Only 20 children on school roll 26 Jan: Children to Bedford Corn Exchange to see a programme of ‘Dance for Everyone’ 21 Mar: Some children to Westoning church to see exhibition of crown jewel replicas 23 Mar: Football match against Houghton Conquest. Houghton won 3-1 30 Apr: School opened after Easter holiday with Mr C H King, county staff as acting head teacher. Total on roll 23. 5 Sep: Mrs Davies returned as head teacher after a term’s primary management course at Cambridge. 24 on roll. 17 Sep: Mrs Davies at interview for post as head teacher of Elstow Lower School – will take up the post in January 2 Oct: David Madel MP had lunch in school 5 Oct: Staff and children to Wootton Lower School to see Da Silva Puppet Theatre production of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ 1985 7 Jan: School re-opens with Mr Jack Graham as acting head teacher 15 Apr: Mrs Doreen M Lawrence commenced duty as head teacher. 29 on roll 22 Apr: Lunchtime clubs organised for older children – athletics, music, dancing and swimming. Sailing tuition on Tuesday evenings 1 May: Road safety talk and video films 6 May: Country dancing at May Fayre by pupils of Shelton and Church End Lower Schools 3 Jun: Miss Marylynne Sturton married during half term and returned as Mrs Chelsom-Pill. Now serving only 6 cooked dinners, 3 of which are to staff. Remainder bring packed lunches. Cooked dinners are prepared at Wootton Lower School and transported to Shelton in tins. 27 Jun: School excursion to Stagsden bird gardens and Emberton Park. Coach accident on return journey. 4 Jul: Visit to Marston Moretaine church as part of religious education 5 Jul: Retirement of Mrs Doris Carter, school meals supervisor 9 Jul: Visit to the Methodist church at Lower Shelton Road 12 Jul: Children’s pet show 17 Jul: End of year concert and prizegiving 2 Oct: Production of ‘James and the Giant Peach’ by the De Salva Puppet Company at Church End Lower School 11 Oct: Harvest festival. Collection of flour and sugar for ‘Band Aid’ which was taken to Bedford railway station to be transported to Africa 11 Dec: Eight pupils absent with mumps 1986 11 Jan: Visit to Bedford Marionettes production of ‘Mother Goose’. 18 Feb: Sponsorship raised £135.79 for Help the Aged 28 Feb – 6 Mar: Pupils compete at Bedford Music Festival (singing and verse speaking) 13 Mar: NAHT [National Association of Head Teachers] action. School closed from 12 noon till 1.30 17 Mar: New school library officially opened 19 Mar: ‘Time and Tune’ concert at Bedford Corn Exchange 25 May: Sports Aid Sunday raised almost £50 4 Jun: Visit to Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Swiss Gardens at Old Warden 9 Jun: Education sub committee decided that the school house (empty for several years) should be sold. School had hoped for its conversion to administrative rooms. 8-9 Jul: Kempston and district schools concert at Addison Centre, Kempston 16 Jul: End of year concert and prizegiving 5 Nov: PTA bonfire and firework display 8 Dec: All pupils to Broadmead Lower School, Stewartby for Christmas entertainment by David Tomlinson and the Cheeky Dog Magic Show 17 Dec: The Marston by-pass was opened 1987 20 Jan: Farewell assembly for Mrs Marylynne Chelsom-Pill, leaving to have a baby. Has been at the school for over 12 years; replaced by Mrs Jenny Rowe. 27 Jan: School pantomime ‘The Golden Goose performed at Grange School, Kempston 2-14 Mar: Bedfordshire Music Festival 9 Mar: Commonwealth Day – the Queen’s letter read at assembly 16 Mar: ‘Time and Tune’ concert at Bedford Corn Exchange 19 Mar: Radio Bedfordshire broadcast live from the school 3 Apr: Marylynne Chelsom-Pill’s daughter born 4 May: Marston May Fayre; pupils took part in maypole and country dancing 11 May: Visit from a representative of Dr. Barnado’s 16 Jun: School outing to Ping’s farm and Marston Thrift 22 Sep: Visit to the Shuttleworth collection at Old Warden 13 Dec: Some children sung carols at the Shelton Methodist Church toy service 17 Dec: School visit to Nene Valley Railway 1988 12 Jan: PTA meeting showed a video advising parents to use seat belts in the back of cars to protect their children 13 Jan: Pupils watched performance of ‘Babylon’ presented by the Snap Theatre at Church End Lower School 22 Jan: School closed due to snow cutting off electricity 27 Feb-12 Mar Pupils compete in Bedfordshire Music Festival 2 May: Marston May Fayre; pupils took part in maypole and country dancing 5 May: Poetry afternoon with Broadmead Lower School 27 May: Mrs C Stubbigs, dining room assistant left 14 Jun: School visit to Whipsnade Zoo 22 Jun: Pupils watched performance of ‘The Secret Garden’ presented by the Snap Theatre at Church End Lower School 3 Jul: 13 children joined with Broadmead Lower School to take part in the National Festival of Voices at the Wembley Conference Centre, London. 3 Oct: Opening of the Yorkshire Bank; children acting as cashier and teller and parents took money to the bank in Bedford. 13 Oct: Class 1 taken to Wootton Lower School to see school dinners being prepared 4 Nov: Bonfire party 18 Dec: 18 Pupils sung carols at Shelton Methodist church 1989 26 Jan: Pupils attend a mathematics workshop at Bedford College 2 Feb: Visit from fire officers to talk about fire safety 10 Feb: Visit to Biddenham Upper School to see a performance of ‘Carnival of the Animals’ 25 Feb – 3 Mar: Pupils competing at the Bedfordshire Misic Festival (verse speaking and singing) 19 Apr: All pupils went to Broadmead Lower School to see a Japanese puppet play ‘Paper Tiger’ 20 Apr: Mrs Rowe resigned – is moving out of the area 26 May: Retirement of Mrs G Clark, who cooks the school dinners at Wootton Lower School for both Wootton and Shelton schools 7 Sep: Autum term begins; teaching in accordance with the National Curriculum. Mrs Elizabeth Gordon has replaced Mrs Rowe. New heating system has been installed during the summer holiday. 14 Nov: Class 1 to Broadmead Lower School to work with author Julia Jarman 18 Dec: Shared carol concert with Broadmead Lower School, St. James’ School, Biddenham and Kempston Rural Lower School, held at Broadmead. 1990 16 Jan: Visit to Broadmead Lower School to watch the Arena Theatre Company present plays about Hans Christian Anderson’s stories 3 -8 Mar: Pupils competing at the Bedfordshire Misic Festival (verse speaking and singing) 18 May: Mrs Lawrence attended interview for position as head teacher of Broadmead Lower School and was successful. Hopes to begin there in September. 23 Jun: School fete opened by David Madel MP 10 Jul: Shared sports afternoon with Broadmead Lower School, St. James’ School, Biddenham and Kempston Rural Lower School, held at Shelton 13 Jul: Performance by the Bell Choir from Pennsylvania at Broadmead Lower School 17 Jul: Mrs Janice Davis appointed for the 0.4 post from September 3 Sep: School re-opened with Mrs Diana Guthrie as acting head teacher to take class 1.
