    Set up in 1929 under the 1929 Local Government Act to take over the powers of the old Poor Law Unions. The Committee ceased in 1948 when superceded (in part) by the Welfare Committee and (in part) by the Children's Committee. Yearbook 1934/35 'To carry out the duties of a Public Assistance Committee as defined by the Administrative Scheme approved by the Minister of Health on the 24th day of October 1929, and any amendments made thereto.' Yearbook 1939/40 '1. To be the Public Assistance Committee required to be appointed by the Council by Section 4 of the Poor Law Act, 1930, and the Bedfordshire Public Assistance Scheme 1929. 2. 'To carry out the duties of a Public Assistance Committee as defined by the Administrative Scheme approved by the Minister of Health on the 24th day of October 1929, and any amendments made thereto.' Yearbook 1947/48 1. o be the Public Assistance Committee required to be appointed by the Council by the Poor Law Acts, 1930 to 1938, and the Bedfordshire Public Assistance Scheme 1929. 2. 'To carry out the duties of a Public Assistance Committee as defined by the Administrative Scheme approved by the Minister of Health on the 24th day of October 1929, and any amendments made thereto.' 3. To adopt from time to time a suitable scale of Outdoor Relief and Regulations governing the administration of the same by the Guardians Committees.
