  • Scope and Content
Was very pleased to hear about Mrs Askew from his friend Mr Heriz Smith. Fears he will never see his godson [Charles Searle Askew] as he is not well enough to take a long journey. Had a bad illness about four years ago which has left him with an internal complaint. Has a wife and 5 children and a good postition. Has about 200 students. Only a few of his brothers and sisters survive. Out of a family of 12 who grew up, only one sister and one brother are alive. Sister lived with him in Odell and knew George [George Thomas Askew]. Sister now lives in St Leonards and, although younger, is a great invalid and hasn't visited since he got married. Goes frequently to visit her and spent August with all the children at the sea-side where she lives. Many years since he was at Odell. Mrs Turney is alive but quite blind. The clergyman that succeeded him in 1864, Mr Hunt [William Cornish Hunt] died in 1891 at the time he was ill. Mr Hunt left a widow and 12 or 13 children, one of whom was married this year. Mr Hunt kept him informed of Odell but now has no one to give him parish news so doesn't know if any relations of Mrs Askew's husband still survive. Is unlikely to see his children grow up for his eldest is not yet 13 and he is 67.
