- TitleLetter from Reverend Charles Edward Searle to Mrs Askew [Isabel Julia Askew nee Curtis]. Sent from Odell Rectory Bedford
- Date free text29 June 1882
- Production dateFrom: 1882 To: 1882
- Scope and ContentHas kept Mrs Askew's letter of the 4th October last year close in the hope of answering it but has been very busy in Cambridge and had no leisure time to answer it. Has people in all part of the world, India, Japan, New Zealand, Canada and the West Indies, that he likes to correspond with - some are former pupils and some relations. Came to Odell last week for his annual holiday and in Mr Hunt's [William Cornish Hunt] absence has taken charge of the parish. Has not seen George's parents but they were never much interested in him except in the hope that he might send them money. Mr and Mrs Turney are still at the same farm. Shares with Mrs Askew some of his family history: his mother was left a widow with 12 children. His father died of a broken heart after failing as a banker at 44. Was brought up to mind religion first of all and leave worldly success to come as it might or might not. His mother lived to be over 80.
