  • Scope and Content
Has delayed in writing to Mrs Askew as he was waiting to see if she would send another letter to provide an explanation for her husband's [George Thomas Askew] failure and suggesting how he could help. Has told his lawyers to prepare a power of attorney to be made out to Mr Cowper (whose name Mrs Askew suggested) to receive money for him. Once Mr Cowper has the money he will pass it onto George for his use. Unfortunately owing to the recent death of his father [possibly the solicitor's father] and the business consequent upon it his [Charles's] Cambridge solicitor has delayed this power of attorney though he requested it two weeks ago. Believes there has been a monetary crisis all over the world and certainly his foreign relations have felt it. Things seem to be mending now and hopes the worst has passed. Many farmers in England are without capital and landlords do not expect to receive anything like the rents of former years and in some cases do without rent at all. Has read Mrs Askew's account of the mill but men in England would not embark their capital in a mortgage on it. Everyone is very cautious now and those who have money turn to the 3 per cents, and English Railways that pay about 4 per cent.
