- Scope and ContentSince last writing to George he has a favour to ask of him. Upon his landing, could George receive a Mr [John] Cory as a friend. Mr Cory's father visited recently and was asking what colony could be recommended to his adventerous son who is tired of the monotony of English life and wishes for more freedom than the architect's desk in his father's office. Mr Cory's father thought of South Africa, where he [Charles] has three brothers but could not recommend the Cape [of Good Hope] for anything except its climate as the farming there is unprofitable. He informed Mr Cory's father of George's successful career in Vancouver Island. Like most Englishmen, Mr Cory's father believed that Canada was frost, snow and perpetual ice like Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr Cory expresses that he is willing to do anything for work and a companion, Mr Lapidge, will also be emigrating with him.
