- Scope and ContentApologies for not mentioning the newspapers that George sends him in his last letter. The newspapers come occasionally but he has an abundance of newspaper reading. His brother [Walter Searle] sends him the Cape [of Good Hope] newspapers. Another brother in Australia is the editor and proprietor of a newspaper, so receives immense bundles from him, and then he receives the Times and a Church paper. Asks that perhaps George only send him newspapers when they contain important news, such as subjects like the confederation or the site of the new capital are discussed. Also reads any educational articles and those connected with the Church. Was very interested to read the description of George's invention of a circular saw worked by water power. Wishes that George would send him a photograph of his mill. Has written out George's account for Mr Hunt [possibly William Cornish Hunt] and the Squire who are interested in all that George does. Recomends that a good book to get out of the library at Victoria is Self Help by [Samuel] Smiles, who has also written a book called Lives of Engineers. 'The local curiosities you promised will be very acceptable, as lately I have joined a learned Society in these parts whose object is Antiquarian and Naturalist pursuits. Indeed I think of having a Stonham Museum, for besides the Roman remains I have discovered in the Village, I have many curious things from Africa and West Indies which amuse and instruct people...I have been for many years a supporter of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, which pays Mr Reeve [possibly William Sheldon Reece, Archdeacon of Vancouver Island] his stipend.' Heard from George Odell recently who has a few acres and cows of his own [in New Zealand]
