  • Scope and Content
Has received George's two letters written in February and May. His [Charles's] brother [Walter Searle] has visited over the summer, a merchant who lives at the Cape of Good Hope - his business is known as Goodliffe, Smart and Searle. They supply masts and spars for ships as well as carrying out repairs for damages received at sea. Hopes to bring George and [Walter] together as [Walter] thinks very highly of douglas pines but the objection in [Walter's] mind is that the timber is too large to fit onto a ship. The timber could be shaped at the Cape [of Good Hope] where labour is very cheap (approximately 2/6 a day). The Cape [of Good Hope] has had terrible adversity lately with successive droughts. The school in Stoneham is in a deplorable condition and wishes for a decent building to be erected. Has not been to Odell since May when he married the 4th Miss Turney to a young farmer who takes John Turney's place at home, a Mr Hensman. Saw George's uncle William and aunt Sarah who was pleased to hear George's condolences on the loss of her daughter Ann. Some extensive repairs where getting ready to be carried out on the church. Has recently heard from George Odell who is settled near Akaroa Canterbury Colony, New Zealand in which he is buying a little land and stocking it.
