- TitleUnfinished letter from Reverend Charles Edward Searle to George Thomas Askew. Sent from Odell Rectory
- Date free text9 April 1863
- Production dateFrom: 1863 To: 1863
- Scope and ContentHas not heard from George since sending his last letter. George's uncle William also has a letter he wishes to send. Was promised a third letter from George to give an account of his mining during the season of 1862. Suspects that mining season has started earlier due to the unusually mild season which is why George has not written. 'I dare say the news from Cariboo made you alter your plans; and not the winter in Victoria'. Had a long chat with Mr Cooper about British Columbia. Hopes to hear that George will settle down with and become a considerable farmer with 2-3000 acres of land of his own and then can send labourers to George. 'tis a pity your agricultural knowledge should be thrown away, and Columbia ought not to depend on America for its provision.' Hopes for George to be precise in his letters of the prospects of a labourer 'I know they must be good; but the expense of getting to you is enormous not much under £40, I find by inquiry - I am pressing the younger ones here to emigrate.' Last month George Odell and his wife (married the preceding week) sailed for Canturbury New Zealand.
