  • Scope and Content
    i) Copy of Letter from Lambeth Palace, 2 Aug 1822 mentions mistaken notion that none of the provisions of the new act take effect till after the 1st September. ii) Letter from Richard Smith, Buckden, 16 Aug 1822 to Charles Bailey explaining it is for Bailey to decide on the manner that the parties should receive the licence. Some information as to fees, just starting out for St Ives to finish the business of visitation. Hopes he thanke Dr Hunt for the trouble he took 'Tell him that we shall now soon see day light with respect to this admirable new Act.' iii) Letter from Richard Smith, Buckden, 24 Aug 1822 to Charles Bailey 'Dr Lushington has given Margetts a most decisive opinion that the surrogates of the Commissaries acting by Patent in loco Episcopi are fully authorized to receive the allegations under the new Act - and also that the licence is to be granted under the commissary's seal, but running in the name of the Bishop - This confirms what I told you before.' iv) Letter from R Smith to Charles Bailey, 29 Aug 1822 confirms previous opinion. Doesn't know why Bailey has not received the Acts of Parliament. 'If you come this way as you mention I hope you will look in - accommodation for man & horse - and I can give you a bed. PS. many thanks for the offer of your Pointer - at present I have two - one of them a loan & if taken away I should jump at your kind offer.' v) Letter from D Bailey, Luton to C Bailey, Bedford, 5 Sept 1822. Asking whether any further instructions have been received. Thinks it will be found scarcely possible in many cases to comply with the requirements of the new Act. vi) Form of marriage licence from Drs Commons (example of form). vii) Bond of John Pendered of Royston, draper and John Edwards of Potton, farmer, re. intended marriage of John Pendered and Jane Seamon of Potton, a minor with consent of her natural and lawful mother, 24 March 3rd year of George fourth.
