  • Scope and Content
The last few days have made all the difference in the landscape; trees bursting into fuller leaf, cherry and pear blossom all over the lower part of the mountain and the hillsides full of wild flowers. On Sunday set off walking with Miss Johnson at about 9.30 and arrived at the Kulm at about 12.25 [Kulm Hotel St. Moritz] to find all the crew who had come on the train feeding at one of the big tables in the big dining room. After a good lunch studied the cloudscapes in all directions; the views were superb. On the walk back mist came down and shut off all the views from the top to half way down. Describes the route taken. A well travelled man has arrived at the hotel. He monopolises the conversation. Told the writer how intimitely Freemasonry is connected to Egyptology. Writer believes Kenneth Dows is a little better than when he was in Arosa. He divides his time between sitting up to meals, and lying in bed or on the sofa and on the balcony. The writer works and reads with him. Have not been able to find a good French teacher, so have started German; the village schoolmaster comes to instruct them. Will probably be able to resume French studies at Davos. Comments on books writer and Kenneth are reading, including 'Fire and Sword in the Sudan', by Rudolf C. Slatin. Mention of the deaths of Lady [Louisa Jane] Brunton and Mowbray Nott Bower[?] Comments about the health of several family members. On Saturday Mrs Johnson, Miss Johnson and the writer took their lunches in a boat and rowed over to the Burganstock and had lunch. On the return trip the wind got up, and had to find a sheltered bay; eventually managed to hitch a ride back in a launch with a coutreous Swiss lady and gentleman. Comments about seeing snakes.
