Hopes Grandmother is improving. Asks after Aunt Katie. Sorry to hear that Basil failed his matriculation, hopes he will be successful next time. Sends love to Aunt Mildred when she visits. Skating contines, but will be gone fairly soon as the ice is melting. Mention of Raverty; he and his sister are orphans and have been abroad taking care of his health for three years. He is only 28 but has a lot of grey hairs. The weather has been uncertain and not affecting people's health favourably. Details of going bob sleighing and skiing; won another small cup in the bob sleigh race. Went skating with a man called Freeman, a Devonian from Tavistock who was at Winchester [School]. He knows the Baring Gould's very well. He was at the same sanatorium in Wales which Shepard patronised for a long time. Attended the afternoon 'at home' of the doctor's wife, Mrs Morland. Took Mrs Dows and Mrs Harwood to the bazaar in aid of the Luthuran church. All the helpers and stalls were in 1830s style. There was a roulette table. The bazaar raised £320. On Saturday evening had to entertain the American Vice Consul 'he was rather a common little man ....[and] we were quite happy to see him off in the post waggon [on Sunday morning]. Enclosed photograph of writer with P C Shepard in background.
