QSR1918/4/5/1c (i) This Deponent Alec Field of Luton on His Oath saith as follows – I am a Constable in the Luton Borough Police Force. On Friday the 9th August 1918 I received a report and made enquiries as the result of which the prisoners were arrested on another charge. I examined Messrs Child and Company’s premises in Williamson Street Luton and found an entry had been affected through a lavatory window. The Window sash had been pulled down. An entry had been made into the general office by removing a screw from the socket of one of the locks of the doors. An attempt had also been made to force open Mr. Childs private office door and also the side outside door of the Warehouse. QSR1918/4/5/1c (ii) On examining the marks on the doors, I found marks corresponding to the screwdriver produced. On the 13th instant I had the two prisoners together at the Police Station. I cautioned them and in answer to questions Moulster said “About 6 o’clock we went back to Childs, first tried to force the side door open with the screwdriver, there Baxter gave me a leg-up to the lavatory window. I got through and unbolted the door and let Baxter in” Baxter said “that’s right”. On searching Baxter on the previous charge, I found 16 seven penny insurance stamps and 9 penny stamps. On Moulster I found 8 seven penny insurance stamps. QSR1918/4/5/1c (iii) The stamps produced are the ones in question. I charged the two prisoners together with breaking and entering Messrs A. R. Child & Company’s warehouse, No. 6 Williamson Street and stealing therefrom a quantity of Insurance stamps postage stamps and money valued together fourteen shillings and a half penny. They both replied “that’s good enough, that’s the truth”. Signed (Alec Field)
