    Ernest Holmes was charged on 30th December 1911 that between 29th November & 23rd December 1911 then being the bailee of a bicycle the goods & chattels of Herbert Starke did fraudulently take & convert the said bicycle to his own use & thereby feloniously did steal the same. And the charge being read to the said Ernest Holmes and the witnesses for the prosecution being severally examined in his presence, the said Ernest Holmes was asked if he wished to say anything in answer to the charge. Whereupon the said Ernest Holmes saith the following; I borrowed sixty pounds from money lenders LP Herbert, 40 Sackville Street London & George Egerton 41 Great Russell Street. I had £60 from Herbert & £35 from Egerton & when I found I could not pay it back I took the bicycles & sold them to pay the instalments. It is my first offence & I hope you will deal with it at this court. Signed E Holmes Taken before me at the Court House Luton, in the Borough aforesaid, on the day & year first above mentioned.
