Correspondence - hand written letter: 83 Russell Road, Bowes Park. London Road October 12th 1911 Sir, I am writing on behalf of my son Henry Byne who is now in Bedford Prison awaiting is trial on a change of theft. When arrested in July he gave his name as George Collins presumably to avoid exposing his family since then I have received several letters from him in which he expresses the deepest sorrow, regret for the pest and desire to reform, and begin a new life. He has now been in prison nearly three months and Sir, you can imagine how I his Mother feel and I would ask you as Chairman of the Sessions to deal leniently with him. His father and I are willing to take him back to his home and our hearts and to do all in our power to reform him and give him a chance to reinstate himself. I would not write this if I were not certain that, my son is truly penitent and decorous of leading an honest life. We all know that prison does not tend to the curing of crime, but in many instances only hardens the offender and think Sir what the consequences might be if this young man, instead of being allowed the chance of leading a new life with God and his parents for his guidance were thrust into prison. I say the result might be the making of a hardened criminal and the losing of a soul. [] Sir have pity on his parents and him and set him free and may God reward you. I am Sir, yours obediently, Helen Byne
