Copy from Bedfordshire Times 8th March1879 concerning 'Bedfordians in the Zulu War'. One extract is from a letter from Mr E. S. Stafford received by his brother Mr R. B. Stafford (later Stafford of Stafford & Rogers, auctioneers and estate agents of Bedford); '... our forces have met with serious reverses. My son Walter .... had two horses shot from under him ... and escaped to the general's [Chelmsford's] camp. ..... Our military or the general have made a frightful mistake .... we will require large reinforcements before matters are settled.' A further letter came from Mr F. Bradbury, 'now serving in the Natal Mounted Police. Out of the thirty men of the mounted police engaged at Isandula [Isandhlwana] twenty seven were killed, amongst whom was trooper Walter Stimson ... of Bedford .... founder of Bedford Football Club and a member of the Amateur Musical Society.'
