Scope and Content
John Hare had a carefully organised archive of sermons and talks, seven or eight hundred in all. Most were written on lined paper, 8" x 5", one side only, the sheets of each held together with a (rusting) paper clip, and they were filed in boxes under themes: "Holy Week", "Saints Days and Holy Days", "Harvest, Remembrance Sunday, Stewardship, Marriage, Unity". Though filed under one heading, some were used on a variety of occasions. Many have in red a serial number running into the 500s, but the reference list to those numbers has not survived.
Each sermon has on it a note of each place, service or occasion and date when it was given, and some of the more popular were used up to 20 times. Early ones date from Friar Park 1939, Hendon 1941, and Colindale 1947. If it was a confirmation or group event, there is a note of all clergy present. Some were marked "beta +" and some "alpha", no doubt according to how they were received.
It was not possible to keep them all, but there is a good representative selection with a few from the early years and a general coverage of topics and occasions. As far as possible all the "alpha" ones are here. They are now in bundles which are sometimes, but not always, entitled in the same words as the original boxes from which they have been taken.
