Examinations & depositions -Information of Wm. Cooper, Leagrave, Luton. He was assisting his father in law Thos. Wilson who kept the Three Horseshoes public house in Leagrave Marsh, in drawing beer, it being Leagrave Marsh Fair. In the course of the evening the following persons came into the house - Jn. White, Stopsley; Jn. Long, Luton; Wm. Tuffnell, Round Green; Jas. Brewer, Luton; Wm. Martin, Stopsley; Thos. Parson, Luton; Wm. Lawrence, Luton. They all remained in the house until nearly midnight but had been refused beer long before that time. A quarrel ensued between Jas. Brewer and a person called Wm. Smith and they went outside to fight. Wm. Cooper went out to prevent the fight but White and Long knocked him down and several more of the party kicked and beat him, several calling out 'this is the Long B----r we want'. Cooper had apparently some time before given evidence against White, Long, Tuffnell and Thos. Carter for stealing his master, Thos. Smith's turnip tops. From the repeated blows and kicks Cooper thought his life was in danger and called out 'murder', which brought two of Mr Smith's servants of Leagrave Marsh Farm, Wm. Lowe and Wm. Rumbles to his assistance. He eventually got back into the house but the door was broken open by some of the party and they beat him again. Long and White both told him that they had come to the house to give him a good thrashing and 'he had had it', and if he wanted more Jn. White said he would give it to him then.
