  • Scope and Content
Taped inside the front cover is the following note: “The Band was formed in November, 1933. The Prime mover was Mr P.G. Boyce, who was the first secretary. No money or equipment was available at the start, but there was plenty of enthusiasm. Only about 6 members had any former experience, but eager learners were forthcoming when instruments were obtained. All kinds of functions were arranged to raise funds, and instruments were purchased as the cash became available. Mr A.M. Philpot, of Luton, was a great help at this time, lending the Band several instruments. Thus through the years the Band progressed by hard work by the members. The first Bandmaster was Mr Youens of Leighton Buzzard, a retired Army Bandsman. Unfortunately, his tuition was not available for long, as he was taken ill and died after about a year with the band. Mr A.J. Aris, who had had vast Band experience, then stepped into the breach and continued to give yeoman service right up to 1959, when he was forced to retire owing to ill health. Under his guidance the Band had progressed through the years to be a force to be reckoned with. Competitions were entered and prizes were won at Bletchley, (1st & 2nd) Cheltenham, (2nd) Aylesbury, (1st) and Reading, (1st). About this time the Band was lucky to obtain the services of Mr Matt. Robertson of Luton, as Musical Director. Under his expert guidance, the Band won 1st prize in the National Contest, Fourth section, in London on April, 1959. Being raised to the Third Section, third place was won in 1960, and second place in 1961. First place was won after a hard fight with strong opposition in 1963. Thus the Band was elevated to the Second Section, and was placed fourth in 1964 in a large entry. The Band can now put up a good show against the best in the land, and is striving to win their way to the top. Most of the playing members are local boys who have graduated through a learners class which is run by Mr A.S. Farmer, the present secretary. Present Bandmaster, Brian Rolls. The Band is experiencing very busy times and is in great demand. Among the engagements are concerts in the Parks in London, Aylesbury and Bletchley. Also local Fetes, etc. The Band is lucky to have the help of a very lively Ladies Committee who are a great help with their fund raising.
