When he had finished paying and was about to return home, a number of persons he had been paying waited at the gate in the workhouse yard and formed a line preventing him ... from coming out of the yard, and calling to one another to stick true ... William Gardener, George Markram and Simon Martin were particularly active in exciting the party to riot, so much so that the said John Burder Squire could not get out of the gate or over the stile and was obliged to retreat into the workhouse and go out the back way.
