Scope and Content
Examination of William Elmer of Millbrook, labourer. With John Smart, Mark Cox and Benjamin Mead he was watching in thre Gravel Pit Plantation, Millbrook, belonging to the Duke of Bedford, for poachers. William Cox came up to the place where he was lying carrying a gun and two pheasants; he was accompanied by William Horn also carrying a gun. Elmer ran after Cox, dropped his stick and his hat fell off in the chase. Cox turned round and hit him with the gun butt, but he secured him. John Smart ran after Horn.
Information of John Smart. Horn dropped his gun in a ditch and fell over whilst running away and Smart thereupon secured him.
Information of Benjamin Mead. He was lying in a different part oh the plantation with Mark Cox. They went to the assistance of William Elmer and John Smart. He later found both guns and four pheasants. He also found 'two bass (canvats) one with shot in and the other a little powder and a glass viol with powder in it'
