  • Scope and Content
Information of William George of Houghton Conquest, constable. As he was leading his horse to the Royal Oak to assist in conveying the prisoners to gaol, he saw Brown 'retreating backwards' from a crowd of about 100 women and children. 'From what I saw of the behaviour of the crowd it was my opinion that their intention was to draw off the constables ... from the prisoners and that they might make their escape the back way from the public house.' Examination of Elizabeth Watts; she did not strike Brown. Examination of Ann Batterson: she was struck by the constable 'and consequently struck him with her patten.' Examination of Mary Batterson. 'William brown said "if you do not fly I will split you I will." ' Examination of Hannah [Harriet] Riddy. She had no pattens on 'and therefore could not strike Brown.'
