Scope and Content
Information of Thomas Crowsley senior of Wilstead, constable. Several boys came up to the door of the Royal Oak whilst the prisoners were in custody and he ordered them 'to be off about their business.' Whilst the riot was going on he heard a boy say 'they were giving Brown the constable it properly.' Otherwise similar to the other depositions.
Information of William Robinson of Houghton Conquest, constable. After Thomas Crowsley had ordered the boys away from the door he came back and said to Robinson 'You had better go out for they will knock that little fellow on the head, meaning Brown the constable.' He went out and called Brown 'Come away Brown, don't take any notice of their rioting.' Brown, with the help of Thomas Crowsley junior, retired backwards, with about forty people following 'swearing and blaspheming in a shocking and dreadful manner and holding up their hands and pattens in a threatening position.' Then similar to the other depositions, except that when they did eventually take the prisoners from the Royal Oak on their way to Bedford he heard 'people from the crowd cry out ... never mind it boys.'
