He was watching for someone to look at snares in a spinney at Willington when [Thomas] Vintiner, came up with a gun. Whitfield said ‘What do you do here?’. Thomas Vintiner replied ‘I am lost.’ James Whitfield remarked on it being an odd place to be lost in and followed him. Thomas Vintiner walked out of the spinney & cried out, ‘You who are forward come back & you who are behind come forward, then Ashford came out of the spinney and presented a loaded pistol to him [James Whitfield] & Thomas Vintiner presented his gun which was also loaded & they both said to Whitfield ‘Stand off, we won’t be taken.’ James Whitfield had before this given the alarm and the remainder of his party joined him and Brampton and Goodship seized the gun from Thomas Vintiner.
