  • Title
Black and white photograph showing woman wearing long dress, shawl, straw bonnet and veil. Original photograph taken indoors with woman stood in front of wood panelling or door. According to information provided by the depositor this is Christine B. Ellis [possibly daughter of Silena’s brother Bernard] wearing the wedding dress of Silena Ellis. Apparently the White family were not Plain Quakers, but Silena’s first choice of material for her dress was rejected as being too bright. A lighter, plainer shade was selected. It was described as being mauve with the silk made up on a glazed cotton lining. The fullness was achieved by the stiffness of the lining and a band of serviceable stiff braid below the hemline. The material was turned over by about two inches at the waist creating a deep gathering of double material helping to hold the skirt out. The deceptively simple bodice was created by clever cutting. The plain sleeves were simply ornamented with a double row of ruching with under sleeves of silk net edged with blonde lace.
