Maps to accompany DBV1 and DBV2 (working copies). Ordnance Survey maps annotated and coloured. If you know the OS sheet number use attached reference sheet to find number of DBV3.
  • Scope and Content
When the valuation was made two sets of large scale 2nd Edition Ordnance Survey maps (usually scale 1:2500, although 1:1250 and 1:500 plans were used for built up areas) were used. One set was used as a working copy and the other as a permanent record, now held by The National Archives, Kew. The working copies are those held here. These vary in completeness and precision in comparison to the permanent records but are none the less valuable sources. Further maps used by the Valuation Office are held in Z720. The maps show the boundaries of each property (also known as a hereditament) by a coloured edging or sometimes by an overall colour wash. Each unit of property was assigned an assessment number, usually written in black ink. This number corresponds to the Assessment Number listed in the books reference DBV1 and DBV2. To order maps you need to know our numbering system for our main 25" OS series. Once you have found the property on the reference grid note the number then use the conversion sheet to check the number of the DBV3 - they are not always the same towards the south of the county! The conversion sheet also tells you how many maps for that area we have if there is more than one. Not all will be annotated and different annotations appear on different maps for the same area. If you know the OS sheet number you can find the number of the DBV3 on the attached pdf.
